The publication was compiled and published by the Roman-Catholic Theological Faculty of Cyril and Methodius, Comenius University in Bratislava and in the Theological Institute in Nitra. In 2007 – 2008, the team headed by prof. Viliam Judák and doc. Štefan Polácik was working on a task supported by a grant from the project of Ministry of Education of Slovak Republic VEGA no. 1/4685/07. Its content represents a continuation of a unique work of similar type written by Ján Hudák: Patrociniums in Slovakia (Inventory and historical development), which was published by the Institute of Fine Arts of Slovak Academy of Science in Bratislava in 1984. After this period and especially after 1989, many new temples and chapels were built in Slovakia. This required to start a new follow up research. The publication contains descriptions of 672 new objects and 190 abolished patrociniums of these sacral objects.
The novelty of the publication is the fact that it reflects the reorganizing of Latin dioceses and the dioceses with Byzantine service in Slovakia which started at the beginning of 2008. The process also brought a change in regional division of deanships and origin of new parishes. The publication also reflects the new administrative division of regions in Slovak Republic valid from 13 August 1996.

- Precise geographical identification given by the division into new archdioceses, dioceses, deanships, parishes (Roman-Catholic) and new archbishopric, eparchies, protopresbyteries and parishes (Greek-Catholic)
- Precise geographical identification given by the new administrative and regional division of Slovak Republic using a six number code of the place.
- Information about patrocinium is supplied by the date, especially the date of origin, architectural style, building activities and also whether it is a National Cultural Monument.
- Patrocinium is characterized by the status of the object, whether it is a cathedral, concathedral, temple, Bazilika minor, church, filial church, chapel or abandoned patrocinium.
- The type of the place, urban or rural, where the patrocinium is situated is also given.
- In case of more important patrociniums, information on the first mention and mean altitude of the place where the objects are situated is provided.
